In December and January we set goals and create strategic plans. Ideally, those goals and plans are communicated well across your company and teams, and everyone knows what they need to do to move things forward. But as the year goes on, it’s easy to get off track, for the trajectory to begin to skew in a different direction. This is why a mid-year check-in is crucial.

As a leader, in can be helpful to pause and reflect on your goals — for yourself and for your team. Are the goals you set at the beginning of the year still relevant or has something changed that requires reevaluation? Are you taking the regular daily/weekly/monthly actions needed to get where you’re trying to go?

Next, consider your team. Does your team still have the goal (and the plan to get there) front of mind? Do they have the resources, tools, and guidance they need?

Are your own professional goals and the goals of your team aligned with where the company is headed? Has the company’s strategic plan changed?

This is a great time of year to meet with your team to discuss where you are and where you’re headed. Feedback on performance, and information on any course correction necessary, ensures the team’s trajectory is going in the right direction.

Who do you need to check-in with? What metrics need to be recalibrated? What process or systems need to be tweaked?
